Crocheting 8-bit Graphs using Half Double Crochet (HDC)

Since we announced our new crochet-along yesterday. We are sharing a post about how to crochet these graphs using standard crochet stitches. These graphs will not come out looking properly if you simply crochet them using single crochet, half double, or double even. These graphs are known as 8-bit graphs, just like the video game. Most often these graphs are done in C2C or Mini C2C. However, there is a way you can crochet them regularly. The simplest way is to treat each box of the graph as two stitches. This will make the work larger and it will scale things out better. You can also try other ways too. This is the simplest one we have found.

Big thanks to Sarita Crespo Varsel for crocheting this example!!

As you can see it is different from the original graph but it works out because it makes the details larger. If you crocheted it regularly, it would look smooshed together.

Alternatively, you can also try crocheting vertically (up and down) instead of horizontally. This does work on some graphs however we can not guarantee it will work on all of the graphs.
