Single Crochet Stitch

The single crochet is the basic crochet. It is the simplest one to do and the first one you should learn. It isn't the most glamorous of the stitch but it gets the job done. You can do a project in all single crochets, it won't turn out the prettiest but it will work and it is great practice.

It is important to remember your hook always works away from you. So when doing a single crochet you want the hook working from front to back (front being the side facing you). To create the single crochet first you must find the stitches. Once you find the stitch, place the crochet hook through the hole, yarn over and pull the yarn and hook back through the hole.

Once you pull through, you should have two loops on your hook. To finish this crochet, simply yarn over again and pull the hook through the two loops. This should leave only one loop on the hook to start the next single crochet.

Single Crochets are not the prettiest stitches and it is very rare that you will see any project work with just a single crochet, especially when it is just regular yarn. However, it is very important to practice this stitch because it comes into play often in the crocheting world.
